Sprint-KM in English Park
A number of shocked citizens of Uppsala stood by and watched as dozens of crazy runners dressed in the red and blue of OK Linné dashed here and there right in the middle of the city, bending down to punch controls, getting up, running really hard, hitting a dead end, cursing, and frantically looking at their maps, trying to find a way out.
This was our club's sprint championships, organized by Jan Troeng and Björn Olovsson on the Engelska Parken/Slottet map made by our own Mats Troeng and Micke Nordström in 2007.

Before the sprint began, over a hundred Linné runners, led by President Edling, gathered at the finish to celebrate Annika Billstam's silver medal in the relay from the recent World Championships (WOC), the first Foot-O WOC medal in Linné's history. After a short speech, applause and the handing over of flowers, it was time to race.

The courses went mostly through built-up areas, with most of the running done on asphalt or grass. Anyone who might have thought before the race that urban sprints were easy had to change his or her mind after tonight! Janne's and Björte's courses offered lots of route choice options, and numerous traps to catching those who don't look at their maps carefully enough. Many runners found themselves running full speed down an alley only to find an uncrossable wall in front of them, others ended up climbing the massive Castle Hill after missing a flatter route choice option, and others ran back and forth just seconds after their starts, figuring out which of the 6 paths leading from the start triangle to take!

At the finish, there were many smiling faces, lots of discussion of route choices, and many shaking heads, when people realized they didn't see the best choice. These are all the marks of a great sprint race, and tonight's adventure was just that! Thanks a lot to Jan, Björn, and everyone else who made this Sprint-KM possible.
